Lacrimal System Disorders

Lacrimal System Disorders

It is generally preferred as a surgical treatment method for watery eyes due to blockages in the tear ducts.

Dacryocystorhinostomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove blockages in the tear ducts from the eyelids to the nose. In case of blockage in the tear ducts from the eyelids to the nose, a new path is created that allows the tears to drain into the nasal cavity.

This surgical procedure can usually be preferred under general anesthesia. After surgery, the patient is usually discharged on the same day or the next day, and the recovery process is usually quick and uneventful.

Dacryocystorhinostomy surgery is usually performed by making a 1-1.5 cm incision at the root of the nose. In this way, the obstruction in the tear ducts is removed and the tears can drain normally.

After dacryocystorhinostomy surgery, it is important for the patient to keep the eye area clean for a certain period of time and to use recommended eye drops regularly. Postoperative checks should also be performed regularly.

Probing treatment of duct obstructions in children

Tear duct blockages in children are a fairly common problem and can usually occur within a few months after birth. This condition can block the drainage of the tear ducts, causing symptoms such as redness, watering and infection in the eyes.

Tear duct obstruction in children is a condition that occurs as a result of the blockage of the channels that allow the drainage of tears into the nasal cavity. This obstruction can usually be congenital or may develop later. In children with canal obstruction, symptoms such as constant watering, redness, inflammation and burrs may be observed in the eyes.

Probing is a frequently preferred method in the treatment of duct obstructions in children. This procedure is usually done under sedation or with local anesthesia. A small probe (tube) is placed through the eyelid into the tear duct to open the blockage. This process is generally simple and effective and can fix the problem in most cases.

The probing process is usually completed in a short time and children are usually discharged on the same day. Eye drops recommended by the doctor can be used in the postoperative period and regular check-ups are important.

After probing, it is important that the child keeps the eye area clean and uses recommended eye drops regularly. The doctor’s recommendations must be followed in order to prevent complications that may occur after the surgery.

If your child has symptoms of tear duct obstruction, it is important to apply immediately. You can protect your child’s eye health with early diagnosis and treatment.

Punctum stenosis and its treatment

I held is an important part of our general health and we may encounter eye problems. Lacrimal drainage system stenosis is one of these problems and can negatively affect eye health.

Punctums are small holes located in the inner corner of the eyelids that allow tears to drain into the nasal cavity. Punctal stenosis prevents normal drainage of tears as a result of blockage or narrowing of these holes. This may cause symptoms such as watery eyes, redness, inflammation and infection.

Treatment of punctal stenosis usually requires surgical intervention. Treatment methods may include:

  • Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR): If there are other tear duct obstructions accompanying punctal stenosis, a surgical procedure called dacryocystorhinostomy can be performed. In this process, a new connection is created in the tear ducts and drainage is provided.
  • Punctum Expansion with Dacryocystorhinostomy:If there is punctal stenosis and there is also an obstruction in the tear ducts, these two problems may need to be treated together. Punctal expansion can be performed together with dacryocystorhinostomy.
  • Punctal Dilation and Stent Application: In patients with punctal stenosis, punctal expansion and, when necessary, stent application may also be preferred. In this procedure, the punctum is expanded and then a stent is placed to keep the hole open.

The treatment method may vary depending on the patient’s condition and the severity of punctal stenosis. Therefore, it is important to contact the ophthalmologist specializing in oculoplasty and create a correct diagnosis and treatment plan.
